Premature aging, dull complexion, dehydration… Pollution affects the skin barrier and is the cause of many skin concerns. Discover in this article our advice to protect your skin from pollution!

How does pollution attack your skin?

Urban pollution is one of the most damaging factors for the skin. Indeed, the polluting agents in the atmosphere (fine particles, carbon dioxide) penetrate the different layers of the skin and disrupt its natural defences: antioxidants decrease, dehydration and sebum production rise. As a result, pollution triggers what is called oxidative stress, which leads to numerous skin reactions.

First of all, the fragility of your skin can lead to a feeling of discomfort and tightness due to dehydration. Your complexion can become dull and greyish. Moreover, pollution accelerates skin aging because the fine particles affect the lipids that protect the epidermis. Finally, sebum accumulates in the pores, which causes blackheads and pimples.

What can you do to protect your skin from pollution?

A tailor-made skincare routine

If you are daily exposed to urban pollution, it is important to adapt your skincare routine to help your skin restore its balance. First of all, remove your makeup every night and gently cleanse your skin, with our Micellar Water for example. The gentle cleanser will help remove accumulated impurities and toxins and help your skin to better defend itself against external aggressions.

Secondly, use our Shea Day Cream or Shea Day Lotion in the morning to boost moisturization and help your skin build up a protective film against pollution. You can then apply a sunscreen to avoid further damage to your skin from UV rays. In the evening, use a Night Cream to encourage cell regeneration and regain firmness.

An appropriate diet

The well-being of your skin also depends on your diet: eating foods rich in antioxidants can help preserve your skin and reduce the effects of pollution on it. Therefore, favor the consumption of vitamin C (fruits, vegetables) and vitamin E (avocado, vegetable oils) and don’t forget to drink enough water to slow down skin dehydration and eliminate toxins.
