Butter from what?

Shea Butter is obtained from a wild tree that only exists in West Africa, in the tree savannas. This tree can reach up to 15 meters high and live 2 to 3 centuries. But it is necessary to wait until its maturity, at 50, to obtain its maximum yield of fruit. It produces around 20kg of nuts per year.

The harvest takes place between June and September. Once ripe, the fruit fall from the tree. It is then that they are picked up by hand by women. The fruit contains a nut which itself contains an almond from which Shea Butter is extracted. Once the almonds are collected, they are sorted and washed, then crushed, roasted and grounded until a thick paste is obtained. This paste will be mixed with boiling water to bring the Shea Butter to the surface so that it separates from the impurities that remain at the bottom.

The Butter is collected then cooled and kneaded before being cooked for a long time to obtain an oil. This oil is Shea Butter in a liquid state. For cosmetic use, it is discoloured and deodorized using techniques that do not affect its exceptional properties.

But what are its virtues?

According to the legend of Nefertiti, Queen of Egypt, used a prodigious cream used by certain ethnic groups in Africa to preserve the youthfulness of their skin. Centuries later, great travellers will come back in their country with this balm, called Shea Butter.

It is also reported that Cleopatra had amphorae containing Shea delivered and generously spread it on her body.
