Since ancient times, vegetable oils are recognized for their cutaneous virtues. Vegetable oils have many properties: moisturizing, nourishing, antioxidant, soothing …. These specificities vary according to their composition. In order to properly meet the needs of your skin, we give you some tips to choose the vegetable oil that will suit you.

What is a vegetable oil?

As the name suggests, vegetable oil comes from the flora. The virtues of this oily substance come from oleaginous plants. Vegetable oil is composed of active ingredients, including the family of fatty acids and vitamins.

Omega 3 and 6 (essential fatty acids) and omega 9 are parts of the fatty acids. These are lipids that help maintain a good level of skin hydration, tone the skin up, improve suppleness and regenerate it.

Vitamins A, D, E and K are the main vitamins recognized in vegetable oils. They slow down and protect against the risks of premature aging of the skin. It is also thanks to them that the absorption of essential fatty acids is facilitated.

How to distinguish vegetable oils?

The comedogenicity index

On the one hand, an important index can help you classify the vegetable oils : the comedogenicity index. This index is measured on a scale from 0 (no comedogenic oil) to 5 (highly comedogenic oil).

What does comedogen mean? It refers to a product that tends to clog the pores of the skin, thus causing the appearance of imperfections such as blackheads or spots.

By nature, oils have a more or less high comedogenicity index. However, the more an oil is exposed to light, heat or air, the more its comedogenicity index increases. In order to avoid the oxidation of your products and therefore a sign of too much comedogenicity we give you a little tip: keep the vegetable oils in a refrigerator.

The texture

On the other hand, you can distinguish vegetable oils thanks to their texture: dry oils and fatty oils. Dry oils are composed primarily of essential fatty acids. They penetrate more easily and deeply into the skin. Conversely, fatty oils are mainly composed of omega 9. Their benefits primarily target the outer layer of the skin. The fatty oil leaves a satiny effect on the skin.
